Why Organic Soap? Because Pesticides Are Toxic

Why Organic Soap? Because Pesticides Are Toxic

Skincare Secrets: Episode 9

Question: Why does "organic" matter for soap?

Answer: Because certified organic soap is free of pesticides and herbicides. Soap is made from plants oils. Globally, plants are sprayed with over 5 billion pounds of pesticides and herbicides every year. Sources 1, 2 Those pesticides and herbicides can end up in the plant oil, in the soap and in your body.

Pesticides and herbicides are toxic chemicals and exposure to them is linked to a host of illnesses including thyroid dysfunction, Alzheimer's disease, and many types of cancer including prostate cancer, brain cancer, and melanoma (skin cancer). Sources 1, 2, 3

4 in 10 Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime and cancer is the #2 cause of death behind heart disease. Your risk of cancer is largely dependent on what you put ON and IN your body. Sources 1, 2

Your skin is your body's largest organ. Whatever you put on your skin gets absorbed into your body, and potentially your bloodstream and your organs. It's vitally important to safeguard your health by limiting your exposure to carcinogenic pesticides and herbicides.

Certified organic soap is made from certified organic ingredients, meaning the plants used to make the soap were NOT sprayed with toxic chemicals.

Certified Organic = No Pesticides and No Herbicides

The "certified" part of certified organic is important because many skincare companies CLAIM to be organic but are not certified. Many companies CLAIM to be "all natural" but nothing could be further from the truth.  Remember that "natural" is a meaningless and unregulated term. Look for 3rd party organic certification and make sure that it's printed on the box.

S.M.O.C. Skincare is certified organic by Oregon Tilth, an Accredited Certifying Agent (ACA) of the USA. The USDA does not certify soap directly, which is why you won't see the USDA certified organic logo on soap, and if you do, it's most likely a violation of federal law. Soap can only be certified organic by an ACA of the USDA, like Oregon Tilth.

You only have one skin and you only have one body. The best way to protect your skin, your body, and your overall health is to use certified organic soaps and skincare products.
